The director of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 prevented Gojo's famously magnificent eyelashes from getting too out of hand in the prequel film.
According to a translation by an avid Jujutsu Kaisen fan, Jさん's (soukatsu_) Twitter, Director Sunghoo Park answered a few questions during a Q&A event at the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 screening in South Korea on Oct. 8. During the session, he revealed that there needed to be an "eyelash police to keep the animators from going overboard with Gojo's eyelashes and shiny lips in JJK 0." Park continued, teasing that "a certain unnamed character designer's ([Tadashi] Hiramatsu) eyelash agenda was too strong and Gojo's lashes kept getting too long."
In Jujutsu Kaisen, Gojo is a teacher at Jujutsu High and is known for being the strongest jujutsu sorcerer in the world. In fact, he's so strong that he has to wear a black blindfold to cover his Six Eyes. As part of the Gojo family, he has also inherited the Limitless, but this technique can only be mastered by those who have the Six Eyes. As the bearer of the Six Eyes, Gojo has the ability to process information at an extremely high speed, allowing him to manipulate the energies of Limitless. He first used Six Eyes when he fought Jogo. The running joke in the fandom is that much of the animation budget must have gone into Gojo's character design as his eyes, a startling electric blue with long white eyelashes, are much more detailed and aesthetically pleasing than any other character.
In the interview, Park gave additional and humorous information about the process of animating scenes in the film. Park says that his daughter caught him when he was using a mirror to visualize the final Gojo and Geto scene, and she believed that he was drunk, consequently "[tattle-taling] to her mother about him doing dumb stuff while drunk RIP." Park's daughter appears to be a huge fan of the anime as he says that he asked the creator, Gege Akutami, to sign an illustration of Yuuji and Maki to "get some dad brownie points. His daughters now keep that drawing as a treasured heirloom."
Not only did Park direct the prequel film, but he also directed the anime's first season. Prior to Jujutsu Kaisen, he worked as a key animator on several other MAPPA series, including the 2016 series Yuri!!! on Ice, 2018's Banana Fish as the assistant episode director and 2020's The God of High School. Hiramatsu was in charge of the character design and was the chief animation director of Yuri!!! on Ice and has worked on Parasyte -the maxim- and Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. Park has not yet confirmed whether he will be returning to direct Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 released in December 2021 in Japan and adapts Akutami's prequel series. The story follows Yuta Okkotsu, a young boy haunted by a very clingy cursed spirit Rika Orimoto, his childhood friend who died in a tragic accident. His beginnings are similar to Yuji Itadori, the protagonist of the main series, where Gojo saves him from getting executed. Instead, the jujutsu sorcerer takes him in as a student at Jujutsu High. The film was highly successful at the box office, earning just under 14 billion yen during its run, and was the eighth highest-grossing anime film in Japanese history until it was recently surpassed by One Piece Film: Red.
