The Apothecary Diaries Season 3: Shisui’s Quiet Tribute Is Everything

When the major story arc driving the first two seasons of The Apothecary Diaries concluded in Episode 48, viewers were forced to say goodbye to several fan-favorite characters. As Maomao’s journey continues in Season 3, both she and the audience have had to pick up the pieces and move forward.

While many beloved faces from the Rear Palace have become scarce or entirely absent, one departed ally still manages to aid Maomao from afar. In The Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Episode 4, titled "The Last Volume," the series proves that even characters who are gone for good can leave a lasting impact on the story resonating most strongly in the silence of their absence.

Quick Episode Breakdown: "The Last Volume"

  • Shisui’s Legacy: A reunion with Suirei and Lady Ah-Duo helps Maomao deduce the location of the missing insect encyclopedia, thanks to her memories of Shisui.

  • The Locust Plague: The recovered book reveals how the Shi Clan's deforestation contributed to the insect swarm, leading Maomao to test a hilarious and stomach-turning culinary solution on Jinshi.

  • A New Threat: The mysterious "White Lady" takes center stage, pulling customers away from the Verdigris House with claims of magic and immortality.

Maomao’s Reunion With Suirei Makes Shisui's Absence Sting

As The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 steadily builds toward its next central mystery, Maomao can no longer rely on her usual circle of informants or so it seems. Following her cliffhanger decision at the end of Episode 3, Maomao visits Suirei to track down a missing volume of an insect encyclopedia that could hold the key to stopping an impending locust plague.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 3: Shisui’s Quiet Tribute Is Everything

With Lady Ah-Duo lounging casually in the background, the reunion between the two apothecaries hits an immediate dead end. Suirei’s former master the man who preceded Maomao in developing Lady Shenmei's "immortality" potion is unable to help. Having served as the original test subject for the resurrection drug Suirei once used to fake her death and escape the Rear Palace, the mentor suffered the same fate as Chou-u: complete memory loss.

Suirei is equally in the dark about the missing book, noting that insects were always her younger sister’s obsession. While both women initially lament that Shisui isn't there to help, a pointed reminder from Lady Ah-Duo sparks a realization. Ah-Duo notes that a girl as clever as Shisui wouldn't leave loose ends. Instantly, Maomao remembers seeing the final volume with her own eyes on the day Suirei and Shisui abducted her from the palace clinic.

This quiet nod to Shisui serves as a poignant tribute to the complex young woman who sacrificed everything to protect her older sister and the children of the Shi Clan. Shisui's friendship with Maomao and Xiaolan anchored the emotional core of Season 2, and letting her passion for insects posthumously guide Maomao's investigation is a brilliant touch of continuity.

"The Last Volume" Brings grim Answers and Comedic Relief for Jinshi

Once Jinshi retrieves the confiscated book from the clinic's storage, the reality of the looming famine sets in. The text reveals a vital ecological link: the Shi Clan’s heavy logging in the woodlands near the affected region drove away the local bird population, removing the locusts' natural predators and allowing the swarm to multiply unchecked.

While the book doesn't offer an easy way to stop a plague already in motion, it does provide a pesticide recipe to help mitigate future crop damage. Naturally, Maomao’s pragmatic brain takes things a step further with a suggestion that leaves both Jinshi and Gaoshun turning green. When Jinshi points out that banning sparrow hunting would anger starving citizens who rely on the birds for food, Maomao suggests rebranding the locusts themselves as a royal delicacy causing the Moon Prince to recoil in horror.

Never one to waste an opportunity for an experiment, Maomao invites Jinshi to dinner at the Verdigris House and serves him a plate of cooked locusts. Expecting him to back down, Maomao is completely thrown off when Jinshi determined to prove himself to her swallows a bite with a hilarious grimace. Confused by his willingness to take the literal bait, Maomao ends up spoon-feeding a recovering Jinshi porridge like a toddler, much to the amusement of Granny and the Three Princesses, who immediately begin speculating about Maomao’s romantic future.

The White Lady's Official Introduction Raises the Stakes

Beyond the locust investigation, Episode 4 significantly ramps up the tension surrounding the mysterious "White Lady." After brief glimpses of her distributing poison to the starving in earlier episodes, the series finally brings her into the spotlight. Rumors are spreading rapidly about an enigmatic woman with albinism who has been captivating crowds with her striking appearance, illusions, and claims of immortality.

During a conversation with the Princesses of the Verdigris House, Maomao learns that the White Lady’s theater performances have become so popular they are actively drawing revenue away from the pleasure district. Knowing she needs to witness this "magic" firsthand to debunk it, Maomao hits a familiar roadblock: she can't afford a ticket. Fortunately, she knows a certain high-ranking official who can fund the trip, even if accepting his help is the last thing she wants to do.

While Season 3's deliberate, slow-burn pacing may test the patience of viewers looking for immediate action, Episode 4 is a masterclass in laying narrative groundwork. Solving a mystery in The Apothecary Diaries has always been about watching Maomao methodically dismantle small clues until an undeniable truth emerges. Every seemingly minor detail in this chapter from deforested woods to street performers—is building toward a massive payoff.
