Netflix Blonde: What To Expect From The Movie

It's important to remember going into Andrew Dominik's Blonde that it isn't about Marilyn Monroe the person, really. It's about Marilyn Monroe the idea. What's clear after watching Blonde, which the filmmaker behind The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has spent a decade trying to make, is that he doesn't really see any humanity in either. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde weaves together extravagant cinematic artifice with a gruelling, cruel portrayal of one of our most iconic movie stars. For the unaware, the bubbly Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend version of the iconic silver screen beauty is nowhere to be found herein. This is, rather, a Netflix movie that reduces Marilyn to the sum total of the child abuse, mental illness, rape, sexism, abortion, drugs, and physical abuse from at least one husband that all, yes, conspired to her set her hurtling toward a destructive end. Unfortunately, in Dominik’s hands, that’s pretty much all that Blonde is. The movie tries to say something, I suppose, about the litany of evils Marilyn had to endure  by, paradoxically, forcing the viewer to wallow in it all. And I do mean all of it. Or, more specifically, all of the things I mentioned above. Netflix, up to this point, had already been pushing right up against the line with the degree of raunchiness it allows to exist on the service. The streamer’s 365 Days franchise, for example, is softcore porn for all practical purposes. As for Blonde, Dominik told Vulture he felt “surprised” by the NC-17 rating, since he’d thought “we’d colored inside the lines.” “Americans are really strange when it comes to sexual behavior, don’t you think?” Dominik continued in that interview. Oh please, come on guy. “People are uncertain about where any lines are” You knew exactly what you were doing when, during an abortion scene in Blonde, you made it seem as though the camera was inside Marilyn’s vagina and we were watching as a doctor’s tongs slowly entered the foreground. You knew what you were doing when you had Marilyn raped onscreen multiple times, and during a sex scene with JFK toward the end of the movie that was basically porn. Or when we saw a drugged-up Marilyn vomiting into the toilet, except the camera was pointed up at Marilyn so that it looked like she was heaving onto us, the audience. “We’re in a time now, I think, where people are really uncertain about where any lines are,” Dominik added in that Vulture interview. That’s the same director, mind you, who when it comes time for the infamous city street scene in Blonde, when Marilyn’s dress is blown upwards decides to luridly drag that moment out. To have her dress keep blowing up and down, up and down, and to then slowly zoom the camera in on what she’s wearing underneath. “I’m not concerned with being tasteful,” Dominik told Sight and Sound.

Ana de Armas Oscar-worthy performance

I’d be remiss, meanwhile, if I didn’t say a word about the fearless performance Ana de Armas gives in Blonde. It’s not just the uncanny resemblance, or the mannerisms she mimics or even the work she did to hide (not completely, but almost) her Spanish accent. She disappears, wholly and completely, into this character.

It’s just a shame that praising her work gives me pause. Because to do so is to inadvertently praise a movie that at times seems like its whole goal is simply to make you, the viewer, feel as uncomfortable as possible. Again and again and again.

From a technical standpoint, this Netflix movie is a masterpiece. But when you’re not looking away in horror, it’s hard not to feel like the content of the film in front of you is really just exploiting Marilyn all over again, under the guise of wagging a scolding finger at that exploitation. You have been warned.

Why is Blonde NC-17?

Where to begin. Multiple explicit sex scenes. An abortion scene, in which the camera appears to be looking out from Marilyn’s vagina, as a doctor’s tongs approach the viewer. Multiple rapes. A scene involving Marilyn and JFK too explicit to describe here. All of that, and more, no doubt played a part.

What time is Blonde released on Netflix?

Blonde will be available at 12 am Pacific Time on Wednesday, September 28.
Is Blonde based on a true story?

The movie is adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, Blonde. The novel, and the Netflix movie, are not straightforward biographies, but rather a narrative “reimagining” of the starlet’s life.
Are there any Marilyn Monroe movies on Netflix?

In April 2022, Netflix released The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes  a documentary directed by Emma Cooper.

Gotham Knights Release Date Possibly Revealed

Did Warner Bros. Montreal just reveal the Gotham Knights release date? Back in August, WB Games finally revealed the next Batman game, Gotham Knights. At the time, the game was announced for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC and given a 2021 release window. And so far, none of this has changed. In fact, we've seen nothing of the game since. However, in a new tweet celebrating Christmas, the developer seems to be hinting at something happening in July.

The tweet comes the way of the official Gotham Knights Twitter account, and on the surface level, seems to be of little significance. And this may be the case, however, fans couldn't help but notice the dates on the poster smackdown in the center of an accompanying image. More specifically, the image features an advertisement poster for a circus, which will be in town from July 16 to July 21, Tuesday through Sunday.

Now, these dates don't line up with 2021. Some fans think this a hint that the game will release sometime during this period, but it seems unlikely given that the dates don't match up. July 16, 2021 isn't a Tuesday, it's a Friday, but this is where things get a bit interesting. If you combine July 16 and July 21, you get July 16, 2021, which again is a Friday, the most common day for big games to release. As a result, some fans think this is a not-so-subtle nod and wink at the game's release date, or at the very least, something of significance, like a second trailer or a release date announcement.

For now, take all of this with a major grain of salt given that we are deep in speculative territory. That said, at the very least, it's an interesting theory, though it's hard to imagine Warner Bros. Montreal being this forward with a tease.

With Kaname Sudo’s impressive decision making, he managed to take down the Eighth clan led by Wang. Will he be able to stop the game master in Darwin’s Game Season 2? The first season has a total of 11 episodes. The first episode was released in January 2020 and looking at the normal break timeline of an anime, it usually takes one whole year before the next season is released.

Kung Fu Hustle 2: Release Date, Cast and Latest News

The original instant cult favorite film, Kung Fu Hustle, that released on December 23, 2004, in China, is being planned to have a sequel finally after fifteen years. The original one is written and directed by Stephen Chow, and the movie will have him at the helm of the franchise’s newest entry, yet again. Having a runtime of 95 minutes, the movie went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time in Hong Kong and the highest-grossing foreign-language film in the US in 2005. The story of the movie is about a poor young man, pretending to be a gang member aiming at menacing the residents of a Chinese ghetto. As the article contains spoilers about the upcoming season, proceed further only if you are comfortable with it.

With our fingers crossed, we can only wish that Chow doesn’t end up pushing the release of this long-awaited sequel, back another fifteen years, as even though he has confirmed the making of the sequel, he is still tongue-tied about the official date of its premiere. Though the original movie was set in native China, Chow has declared that Kung Fu Hustle 2 will have a foreign background, contrary to most of his films. The colorful cast of the first part of Kung Fu Hustle had added to the charm of the movie, many of whom were more memorable than the main characters. However, the new sequel will be casting new faces, yet keeping the possibility of casting the recurring actors alive, along with the starring of a female lead. Along with directing, co-writing and co-producing Kung Fu Hustle, Chow has even starred in the film as the main character, as Sing. This time, Stephen Chow, though, will not be a part of the franchise as the lead, he will still be making a cameo role. The original movie, Kung Fu Hustle, cast Stephen Chow, Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu, Kwok Kuen Chan, and Bruce Leung in lead roles. Kung Fu Hustle is a Chinese martial arts film, a humorous parody, and a special tribute to the wuxia genre. Though it contains most of the characteristics of a typical wuxia movie, it is salted with a lot of exaggerations, serious situations, and comic plots to make the movie worth watching. The second part of the film will be more like a spiritual follow up to the original. Rather than being just a sequel, it is going to be a reboot of the original one. Kung Fu Hustle is Stephen Chow’s only film where the mood turns darker and serious as the movie proceeds forward.
