Imu’s Third Form vs. Loki’s Hybrid Zoan

Just as Killingham is scrambling away from Sanji, he freezes sensing the suffocating presence of Imu’s Haki.

The supreme ruler of the World Government stops holding back. Imu reveals a terrifying third form, morphing into a colossal beast featuring an elongated torso, a towering neck, and massive horns. Stepping up to challenge this nightmare is Elbaph’s disgraced prince, Loki, who finally unveils his highly anticipated Hybrid Zoan Form.

As the two clash, Loki notices something bizarre: Luffy has completely vanished from the battlefield. Shocked, Loki remarks that he never pegged Luffy as someone who would turn tail and run in the middle of a fight against Imu.

The scene then shifts to the roof of a house in the Giant Village, where Luffy is perched, staring down at the Rain God Zaza MMA. However, this isn't Gear 5 as we know it. Luffy has transformed into a mysterious, primal new form!

Abandoning the pure white aesthetic of Nika, Luffy now sports black hair, a wide ape-like nose, a tail, and sharp fangs heavily evoking the mythical Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) or a feral awakening of his Zoan lineage.

Without warning, this feral Luffy leaps from the roof and latches onto the Rain God Zaza MMA. In a savage move we have never seen from the Straw Hat captain, Luffy sinks his fangs into Zaza’s body, causing it to violently explode!

Staring up at the savage silhouette in sheer disbelief, the giants of Elbaph can only ask one question: "Who the hell is that?!"

Would be sick. This fight is clearly showing that luffy is getting overwhelmed by imu. He needs his sword and shield to help him out! Considering how they are the "Monster trio" it was always very clear to me how broken they would get at some point. They are still so young and have potential like almost no one else in the entire story. The way they grow strength wise is insanely fast. This is necessary to compete with the absolute strongest in the story and it was set up very well from the start. It just gets even more absurd from here on out.

If you've ever played dungeons and dragons, the warlock class is a good representation of imu and the holy knights. There is a pact where the patron bestows you powers at their will in exchange of whatever the patron wants. Imu being the patron his pact is with the weapons from the original kings and by bestowing omen on the holy knights allows them to use them and I believe killingham produces the armor as part of the rimoshifu family equipment. I also see this imu possessing gunko using a grimoire to summon the weapons or attacks, as domi reversi was triggered after pistol and the bullet.

The other thing I would say is why sommers only does omen boosted attacks while killingham does the armor, is also related to combat style and devil fruit skills, rather than a power disparity between them. I agree with the feeling like he can break bullets wasn’t a big deal. But thinking about it, I feel most people in the op world fear guns. Few pirates actually use them and the navy all have them. When faced with guns it’s expected luffy to jump in front of them and bounce the bullets back. But now if luffys not there he feels he can even stop bullets with his legs, meaning he can protect people without luffy around if guns are involved. Also maybe implying he’d be fast enough on his feet to stop a bullet which would be insane speed. I feel it’s lost a bit in translation but you’d know better than me! I think the spear has to be a person too and it can only be an elbaf linked person, hjaridin uses spear of elbaf as a named attack but its not a giant, I actually think its ussop somehow. Its abit late for luffy to have a weapon even though the staff/pipe tease with sabo when they were young. Somehow the spear from the skypeia guy with norland is linked to ussop lore wise. As for maki its looking more likely that its manifested haki, sort of like zoro's ashura, and I think this is how you make black blades.

No implication this his regen can slow down, except for coc. Also, IMHO, clearer dialogue from sanji about accepting his body, enhancements and all, as a gift from his mother instead of a curse from his father. Can someone tell me, how sanji's eyebrow was showing his change. Because when I checked now, his eyebrow has most of the time the spiral on his inner face side. It's rare for him to have the spiral on the outside. Like anytime I googled his face in previous chapters, even back to fish man island, his eyebrow is spiraling in the inside.

This is the best chapter of this series in a while. Sanji is such a good character. I know one piece isnt the most philosophically deep series in the world, but it baffles me that people say the characters have no depth. Sanji’s royal-like positioning as he flicks away what possibly could be his last cigarette is so poetic and kingly; always trust oda’s writing process, truly an amazing chapter! I am so happy for sanji, who happens to be my favourite straw hat crew member. 

 I am in such two minds about this chapter, and the whole of sanji's arc. On the one hand, sanji remains one of oda's best-written, most well-developed characters, and his growth here, coming to terms with his self-destructive impulse and overcoming it by leaning towards his protective nature is beautiful.

On the other hand, I still strongly dislike the fact that coc is the only way to counter omen and gk immortality. So by extension, I strongly dislike the idea that sanji needed coc to have this particular power-up. I personally feel like it would have been even cooler if his power-up defied all expectations, and did what only coc is supposed to be able to do, by the power of his sheer passion (*cough* legs on fire *cough*). Coc represents a specific type of personality and its expression, IMO, and sanji is not that person. Him being 'not that person' is his greatest strength. Even here, he achieves coc not by asserting his dream of excellence or power or competition, but his drive to protect.

I guess it could be framed as wanting to be the greatest protector in the world? Eh.

But obviously this ship has sailed, and coc is the ultimate power-up in the series now. Ugh.

At this rate though, I really hope oda gives usopp coc, at the very least. Limiting coc to the trio would be a manifestation of my biggest critique of the use of coc in the story. The warrior of the sea needs to be able to make people froth at the mouth with his sheer presence. (He almost certainly won't.)

I am so curious as to what omen actually is. How is it the 'opposite' of coc? How does it imbue weapons with such power? Is it like enma? Or is it something else?

So was sanji able to use haoshoku to make his eyebrow return to normal and deactivate the germa lineage factor? Oda has stated that his eyebrows represent his internal conflict with his germa identity. This isn't him using haki to physical transform or de-activate the lineage. This is him firming up his state-of-mind about his lineage and fully embracing using the tools he was given for his own pursuits. This is showing us that he's accepted who he is and moved past the weight of the germa identity hanging over him to become his own self. I took this as showing that now he is fully in control of using both his germa abilities and his haoshoku haki, and implying that he is likely to use them both in conjunction moving forward, similar to how luffy is always using coc when he's in gear 5.

Fantastic chapter being perfect culumination of sanji character which was already explicitly referenced, captured ever since sanji introduction his philosophies, how he was looking down upon himself due to his isolated past right before slowly but surely opening up just like when nami asked sanji how on earth he got inside east blue from his hometown considering red line separates all the seas whom sanji in order not to worry others, sanji unusually acted by being more colder, cautious, hesititant before finally sanji could rely on straw hats in whole cake island whom he did all of it to luffy etc protecting them against germa 66 which leads towards this moment how sanji fully accepted himself by rather shielding himself as in whole cake island, thus wants to be luffy shield while requesting in his own thoughts for zoro to be his sword is great.

He just hit harald really hard in the chest with conquerors coating and that was enough to kill him. We know the Roger pirates were aware of the conquerors coating slowing down their healing, but we haven't properly seen the fights between them as they tried to get shanks back. Maybe it was always really quick clashes and they just ran after hitting a crippling blow? So never had a chance to discover the steel heart. I think they can move the heart around too because we saw gunko's whole top half get blown off and her heart didn't drop to the ground.

This may have been the best elbaph chapter for me so far,honestly might be one of my favorite chapters in op period. Really satisfying and heart warming seeing sanji accept and love himself after an entire life of internal suffering.  Is he conjuring longinus multiple times? I thought imu gave him the sword along with omen, and sanji visibly destroyed the spear 2 times before the final clash.

Yet, on the last page the spear is clearly intact. I believe its just summoning the weapon using maki. Its a combination of their connection with imu (who can use the weapons), and their granted power of maki solidifying dark will into a physical, metal-like essence, like the armor he used in the chapter. Sanji keeps breaking the spear, with killingham needing to re-summon it repeatedly.

Throughout the story so far supreme king has only slowed down their healing. And that is what killingham keeps saying in this chapter. Sommers seems to think he'll die if zoro uses supreme king, though. Maybe that's just because he knows zoro figured out the steeled hearts, and slowed-down healing makes those accessible. But supreme king being how to kill them also is rife with problems since it makes a lot of past characters like rocks and gaban seem incompetent - for literally slicing the knights to ribbons multiple times with that special haki but apparently never aiming for the chest - and it means that 7/10 of the straw hats can do nothing but shove their thumbs up their ass for the duration of any battle against imu's forces.

The secret weakness of the world government being "Punch, slice, and kick them the same way you were already doing, except this time you believe in yourself" is also pretty boring, shonen wise. This is oda's problem to solve before it's too late. The best solution from here would be to make it so supreme king is not the full solve and another key element is still missing; therefore supreme king haki is best used by the world's defenders to protect those who cannot use it from imu's forces, while the weaker people set up whatever is necessary to actually secure the kill.

Meaning zoro and sanji won't get the kills. I think zoro might be able to slice sommers up enough to get to the heart but we'll figure out something else is necessary to destroy it. It looks like they can hide/move their mechanical hearts. When somers was completely broken by luffy and loki, and he started to rejoin his pieces, it looked like he catched his heart with his head and kept it inside it. Also, gaban cut him through the chest when they first met in elbaf and he didn't touch the heart. The holy knights are actually easy to kill if you know their secret, but they have kept that tiny weakness perfectly hidden and secret for centuries. Rocks, gaban and the rest of supreme king haki users that fought the holy knights were comfortable just defeating them, breaking them to pieces, putting them in agony and letting them regenerate for a long time. They were not going for the kill nor wondering how to put them down for good. They only needed to defeat them momentarily so they could flee and go about their business.

Will they survive only for imu to get their asses when they retreat? I can't see a world where imu looks at the outcome of this arc any more leniently than he did with egghead, so I feel like they have to die. I'm excited to see sanji & zoro's interaction post-battle though, and with all the other crew members too. With the side battles done it's time to wrap luffy's fight, so loki's hybrid form is next and then probably imu's headed back home.

Also small prediction about the arc's anime adaptation: if the movie & episodes next year all encompass the same amount of around 28 chapters - next year's run should end at 1178; the chapter where imu announces he'll leave the holy land.

That means that 2028's batch finale will probably fall pretty in line with the end of the big fighting portion of the arc we're in now at the future chapter 1206. I personally get the feeling that there’s probably going to be a continued conflict even if sommers and killingham were to be defeated in the next chapter. Because the kids are nowhere near boarding the ship and that’s been established to be the real win condition for imu.  Zoro already dropped the ball by leaving the ship intact, but given the last few chapters it doesn’t make sense for sanji to make a similar mistake.

My money is that K.O.ing killingham doesn’t cause the sleeptids to disappear and that the dream version of iva vanishing is hinting that they only go away when people stop being afraid.

Zoro is designed to be a samurai. His primary characteristic includes self-control, loyalty, honor, courage, and compassion. This may have been something that was passed down by his anchestors from wano. Self-discipline is ingrained in his blood. He is tough on others, but more than anything, he is tough on himself. He may be brutal to his enemies, but deep down he is not so different from sanji. Recall how luffy chose to recruit him.

It was after he discovered zoro sacrificed himself to save a child. Like sanji, he has his own code of honor, but unlike sanji, he has a strong sense of self. An overly traumatic backstory may as well tarnish this. His original backstory is more than enough to explain why he is so straightforward in his ambition. It's the purest display of honor to his dearest friend. After thinking about it some more I think part of it is the fact that zoro is the most fight focused member of the crew. Everyone else can and will fight but they all have another role, zoro’s only official role is fighting. Even his dream is specifically to defeat the strongest swordsman. So between his dream and his discipline he’s a demon in battle but a firm but nice guy outside of fighting.  As time passed, I've grown to like how zoro is portrayed in the series a lot, compared to when I was a teen and found him boring and bland.

In my opinion, unlike most (if not all) of the crew's dreams and aspirations, zoro's path to his goal is way more direct and straightforward. There's no roundabout path to becoming the strongest. To be the world's strongest swordsman, you have to fight and get stronger. Every encounter is a chance to prove and test yourself, and you must be ready for each one. So he trains everyday.

Ever since they reached the new world after the spanking they (and he specifically) received by kuma and kizaru, zoro was very aware that the threats they were gonna face were unlike anything back in paradise, so he understandably focused even more on his training.

Zoro is not "Bland and boring", not to me at least. He's extremely dedicated, disciplined and focused on his goal, and I like that a lot.

Such a fun way to slow roll their setup before they get to facing down shamrock and others.  One aspect of oda's writing when it comes to his characters is how much emphasis he put into nature vs nurture. Almost every backstory gives you explanations about why characters behave a certain way. For example, nami's tendency to steal is caused by her growing up poor. These behaviors don't happen in a vacuum.

Oda took in a step further when it comes to sanji. Sanji has always been a man full of contradiction. When he was starving together with zeff on an island, he fought to survive, yet deep down he also wanted to disappear. He had a lot of pride in his cooking and his fighting abilities, yet he also felt he is dispensable. This discrepancy is quintessential nature vs nurture.

Sanji's nature had been suppressed heavily by his traumatic childhood and further compounded by his experience in baratie. While zeff is sanji's true father figure and he did his best in his own pirate way, zeff's upbringing shaped a large part of sanji's personality and his moral code. Despite this, sanji's true nature somehow remains unblemished. He is still naturally kind-hearted, generous, caring, and above all emotional, sensitive, and passionate. What has changed is the way he perceived himself and how he expresses himself. He is so deeply affected by his experiences to the point that you can trace every single of his behavior from his traumatic past.

That's why this chapter is deeply important for sanji's growth, as he used his experiences to reconcile with who he truly is, where nurture finally brought about his true nature instead of suppressing it - a will so strong that no matter what he experiences, he still remains the kind-hearted boy his mother envisioned.

I found that way dumb. How could that be a thing seriously? Dont get me wrong im aware a lot of things in one piece happen, but he used haki before and allowed himself to use his genes with/without haki. Like there is no clear acknowledgement that twisting his eyebrows was due to him suppressing his genes and due to that holding on his conquerors. If any these last two chapters made clear why he didnt have conquerors and has nothing to do with suppressing his genes with haki, no? I get loving himself is to accept who he comes from, but has no relation to the germa gene/powers. I can be wrong for sure.

What if the 8 dots on sanji's shield represent the straw hat crew? I noticed something interesting: there are exactly 8 dots surrounding one central circle. What if this is symbolic? The central circle represents luffy. The 8 surrounding dots represent the other 8 straw hats. Sanji himself is represented by the shield, protecting the crew. So I now think that the real reason why sanji was running from the okama in kamabakka is not because they were problematicly trying to hit on him. Most likely, they were trying to get him to embrace self love in the only way they themselves knew, with some good ol' fashioned drag.  While I love oda’s direction here and personally can see it why sanji calls himself "Luffys shield" (also great contrast of spear vs shield between qillingham and sanji), I was expecting more a "Hey, mosshead, you can be luffy’s sword. I’m going to be his spear."

Judging how his style of fighting and defeating opponents matches more that of a spear and how his current arc is about moving away from just protecting others and finally defending himself/taking care of himself. It would have made more sense for him to step into the role of a pure offensive weapon capable of shattering defenses, completely mirroring his mental breakthrough. Plus, a literal spear-versus-spear clash against qillingham would have been a cool metaphor. If anything I feel like jinbe is more fitting for the role of luffys shield.

It's soo good to see sanji's growth as a character and his journey to self-acceptance and self-love! The action panels were great too. It was very satisfying to see killingham get his ass kicked. Hopefully this silences the people saying that this arc has been boring. Sanji has had an incredible character arc and I'm kind of proud of him, so well done oda. These recent chapters have really recontextualized the whole series for me a lot of things that seemed to be played off as gags turned out to be important.  Sanji's always been my favorite, I've been getting shield vibes from the last few chapters which shows how amazing oda is. Truly, looking back sanji has always been the straw hat's shield. Someone else mentioned that being his last cigarette cause it ties together the self harming attribute sanji had. Having him stop smoking would be soooo brilliant.

I can't sing any better praises of this chapter than have already been written here, so instead I want to muse on the notion that a gods knights regen can slow down. Or was that just killingham coping, trying to convince himself sanji doesn't have conquerers? My theory is that his eyebrow changes whenever his exoskeleton protects him from damage his armament couldn't prevent, or when he is relying on his exoskeleton without trying to defend himself. I think it changed back to normal here because sanji is choosing to defend himself even though he knows his body can take a ton of punishment now. Such a deep and emotional chapter. I’m so glad to see we have a good conclusion to sanji’s powers and character growth that we have been wanting for so long. His past traumas affected him so much that he never came to fully accept who he is as a person. Thankfully with ivankov’s help he realized this lesson and sought to became a person who is uniquely himself, first!

The lineup of his enemies is cool, would never thought of wadatsumi of all characters would show up like this, but I love to see it. All hail the giant hairy baby! The omen armour killingham displays is pretty neat. He at least beats sommers out in the cool department. I'm guessing we'll get both of their defeats next chapter.

Sanji finally is able to put his trauma behind him and this will make him more reliable to avoid damage. Killingham got over his panic attack and he went all-out, but it was not enough against sanji's coc haki.  I think there's something to be said about a bunch sanji's opponents throughout the series being terrible people who rely on defense, like pearl, vergo jabura. It really comes around. And for the guy who said he has to protect his hands at all costs or he can't cook, sure took him long enough to realise if he doesn't protect his legs (and by extension himself), he can't protect his crew. Man I love sanji, he truly has been my fave since day one. Sanji's fight is so much better than zoro's that I'm honestly disappointed with oda.

Ever since the leaks showed us that zoro and sanji would have a sword/shield parallel, I've been thinking about ‘nothing happened’. It's my favorite one piece moment, but now I wonder why oda didn't have sanji take luffy's pain, since he's the shield. And I think the chapter should've ended with an explicit awakening. I mean, we get that sanji's stuttering and has self-esteem issues, but now that he understood and overcame his feelings, I think we should move on to the other subplots in the next chapters.

I wanna see an actual fight between zoro and sommers, I wanna know what's in biblo's box, I wanna see what's going on with imu, loki and the other straw hats.
